Cheers to carbon dioxide detection! Northern Restaurant and Bar 2016

Analox Sensor Technology kick-started the exhibition season with a trip to the North-West to attend Northern Restaurant and Bar 2016.

Northern Restaurant and Bar took place on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 March at Manchester Central. It is the largest hospitality exhibition in the North-West of England and saw over 270 exhibitors and over 7000 visitors over the space of two days.

There were a wide range of exhibitors at the event; from food suppliers and packaging providers to breweries – both established and fledgling.

Analox Sensor Technology were not alone at the event – we were joined by North-West based distributor Gas Monitor Point (and parent company Point Safety) who shared a stand with us. Between us, we were ready to show attendees the dangers of carbon dioxide leaks.

We were on to a good start at the show as our stand was opposite the Food Porn Awards – a search to find the best looking food from restaurants across the North West… with lots of delicious looking photos!

Speaking of delicious, there were lots of samples to try at the exhibition –  exotic cups of tea, crispy sweet potato fries, mouth-watering cakes and lots of different varieties of craft beer and ciders. There were also chefs cooking up tasty treats, including North-West favourite and Saturday Kitchen stalwart Nigel Haworth.

Carbon dioxide in breweries – how is it dangerous?

Carbon dioxide is a by-product of the fermentation process in breweries and needs to be monitored. As it is colourless and odourless, it is hard to detect, and elevated levels in the atmosphere can cause unconsciousness and even death.

Incidents can happen even in the largest breweries, so it is important to protect staff and customers. Although it is not a legal requirement to have carbon dioxide gas monitors in breweries, it is good practice to have them.

Our Ax60 CO2 detector was especially created for the beverage and hospitality industry, a fixed detector with visual and audible alarms if gas levels rise above acceptable limits. There is also the Ax60k – a smaller version which is ideal for micro-breweries.

Our Aspida is a portable detector which can measure both carbon dioxide and oxygen, ideal as a back-up to a primary gas detection solution as well as for storage tanks.

Gas detection in commercial kitchens

Our target audience at Northern Restaurant and Bar was breweries, but we did get some interest from chefs concerned with gases in commercial kitchens.

Elevated levels of carbon dioxide can be an issue in commercial kitchens, especially if ventilation is poor. Ideally, kitchen appliances should shut down automatically if CO2 rises above safe levels.

In conclusion, we had an interesting time at Northern Restaurant and Bar – not only did we get to talk to companies about their gas detection requirements, but we got to eat a lot of good food too!
