Pub is The Hub – what could your local be?

It’s a frequently used and terrifying statistic – 29 British pubs are closing a week, with the number of pubs falling to their lowest level in a decade. With this in mind, members of the public are taking steps to ensure that their local remains the heart of their community with the ‘Pub Is The Hub’ initiative.

Pub is The Hub is a not-for-profit organisation inspired by a question asked by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2001, when he enquired if local pubs could be used to support the community in rural areas. Since then, a team of volunteers and supporters have vied to champion pubs as the centre of the community by helping pubs supply additional services by providing advice and grant opportunities.

Pub is The Hub encourages pubs with room to spare to take on additional opportunities, including shops and community services. Pubs across the country now double-up as anything from post offices and libraries to theatres and school dinner providers.

There are lots of wonderful examples of pub across the country diversifying – from The Three Horseshoes in Suffolk which doubles up as a farm shop to save villagers from taking an eight-mile round trip to the local supermarket, to The Chequers in Norfolk which provides ‘dementia-friendly’ lunches for dementia suffers and their carers.

Pub is The Hub has worked with over 400 pubs across the country and is funded by large pub chains (Pubcos) including Greene King, Enterprise Inns and Marstons Brewery. Originally focusing on England and Wales, it launched in Scotland in January 2016 with support from the Scottish Government.

Alongside assets of community value, which helps gives voluntary and community organisations time to gather the funds to purchase their local pub, Pub is The Hub is a great way to ensure that not only pubs stay open, but that they help the local community thrive.
